About the organization:
SRIJAN (meaning creation in Hindi) was registered as a Public Charitable Trust in January 2000. It now works directly with more than 25000 rural poor families to eradicate poverty in 14 districts of the states of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Rajasthan. (visit www.srijanindia.org for more details) We build on this rich experience of direct grassroots interventions to support Governments and NGOs in designing programmes which aim to bring prosperity in rural areas. Over the past six years, we have had fruitful collaborations working on large scale livelihoods projects with National Government and State Governments of Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Gujarat, Orissa, MP, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and UP. We have also supported large scale livelihoods projects for Government of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We help in conceptualizing programme/ project components, develop recruitment and selection systems, develop HR policies, and design capacity building strategies. We are the pioneers in exploring an ‘attitude fit’ as part of selection methodology for such programmes. We have designed tools which aim to test and identify persons with the right attitude to work in such programmes. We have become the preferred human resource agency for many rural programmes. As a first, we have successfully designed and piloted performance management systems for large scale livelihoods projects being implemented by various state governments. We have designed detailed job profiles, Key Result Areas, Performance Indicators and a thorough and transparent appraisal and reward systems. Jharkhand, with an area of 79,714 sq. km, 24 districts and 32,620 revenue villages, accounts for 2.4 per cent of the total geographical area of the country. With a population of 2.69 crore, the state accounts for 2.6 per cent of the total population of the country. The rural and urban population of the state accounts for 77.7 per cent and 22.3 per cent, respectively of the total population, as per 2001 census. In spite of rich mineral and natural resources as well as many government schemes / programs including on-going Tribal Sub-Plan and Watershed Mission, the challenges remain and thus, the large proportion of the population are still poor, particularly among STs and STs. The poverty ratio among STs and SCs in rural areas is, in fact 54% and 57.5% respectively, and is higher than all India level. Due to the importance of food security, agriculture, forestry and livestock for the poor in the state, the project will focus its resources on these themes; however, relevant sectors and issues such as urban poverty, skill development and migration will be explored to support innovations and better livelihoods for the poor in other sectors. The first year of project cycle (2009-2012), will focus on setting up the state and district/bock team(s) and institution building process through involving the social mobilization agencies and capacity development of the community organizations aiming at building the foundation for the long-term development and providing long-lasting impact for the poverty reduction in the state.
